Forget what you’ve heard. This is why you need to start training at night

A solid sleep and slower, stress-free mornings, for starters.

If Instagram has taught us anything, it’s that the pinnacle of #health and #fitness is waking up before the sun rises and ‘starting the day right’ with a sweaty session, followed by a green juice in hand – probably. But for some (hello, shift workers and night owls) working out in the AM is simply not feasible.

Every person has their own routine and preferences when it comes to training – so before you write off your night moves as ineffective – or worse, give up before you even start trying, here are five reasons why training at night is a great choice.

1. It creates healthy work habits and balance – and you might lose more weight

By having a dedicated time that you stick to working out in the evening, you are more likely to not only ensure you get through your work list each day but that you also leave the office at a reasonable hour. Work life balance. Check.

You’re also more likely to choose a healthier dinner option to refuel your body post training. Less couch time at night means less snack time. Another check.

Which leads to my next point… Once you’re home, you will be pretty tired from your workout, which leads you to getting…

2. A solid sleep

Without needing to wake up startled to a screaming alarm at stupid o’clock – or, you know hitting the snooze option – you will have a solid sleep and wake up rested and calm. You also get the chance to relax at home with your partner/ kids/ family/ pet/ self (!) without racing out in a frenzy each morning.

A solid sleep also helps you lose fat faster! Studies suggest that people who sleep fewer than 6 hours per night gain almost twice as much weight over a 6-year period as people who sleep 7 to 8 hours per night.

Another study reported that subjects who averaged 5 hours of sleep per night had a 73 per cent increased likelihood of obesity over those who slept 7-9 hours per night. Ouch. 73 per cent! Get to bed at a decent hour and get a solid 7-8 hours sleep each night – and if that means changing the time fo your work-out to after work – great. You’re ticking all the boxes.

3. You’ll have more energy to fuel your workouts

Your hormone levels balance out and you will have more energy from your food intake as the day progresses. When you rush out of bed in the morning, take down a coffee (or even worse, head out with an empty stomach) your stress hormone, cortisol, is at an all-time high. This hormone helps regulate the fat burning in your body. And the more stressed your body is, the more fat your body retains – regardless of how hard you train.

4. Evening workouts help you decompress from the day

What better way to blow off some steam after a hard day dealing with your boss/ workmates/ life than throwing some weights around, or even better, punching and kicking your way through a boxing, kickboxing or MMA styled workout?! Studies show that exercising releases the feel-good hormone, dopamine, which is exactly what you need to be feeling on your way home after hustling those huge deals.

5. You’re going to the right ‘bar’ at night time

Nobody ever felt worse after an evening workout! The same can’t be said after those famous ‘one drink’ sessions with your mates after a stressful day at work. Take your frustrations and pent up energy out on immune boosting and booty building burpees, not a cocktail and deep fried pub food that will leave you burping your way home.
